How Nick Carlson Won The 2016 US Amateur Quarterfinals

Nick Carlson and Dylan Meyer faced off Friday afternoon in a Big Ten matchup. Carlson is a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan. Meyer will be a senior at Illinois.

 

Hole 1: Par 4, 441 Yards

Off the tee, Meyer finds a bunker left, about 170 to the green. Carlson is in the second bunker left, with 125 to the green.

Meyer’s second flies to the lower green tier. Carlson blows his shot over the green near the cart path behind. His lob from there rolls to the front of the green.

Meyer’s long uphill putt is long right. Carlson just misses left. The putt is conceded. Meyer putts out.

Hole 2: Par 5, 533 Yards

Meyer finds the left rough, some 247 from the green. His second shot hits the front edge of the elevated green.

Carlson is in the right side bunker, 224 from the green. His iron out of the bunker leaves him 70 yards short. A pitch to the green is long and ends up in the back rough.

Meyer’s putt is well past the hole. Carlson’s pitch hits the hole and rolls six feet past. Meyer putts in.

Meyer 2 Up Through 2

 

Hole 3: Par 3, 187 Yards

Meyer’s tee shot barely misses the hole, then rolls 12 feet past. Carlson’s ends up on grass on top of the left bunker greenside. He makes a tough lob to the green for a midlength putt. Still away, he makes the putt for a tough up-and-down. Meyer misses his first putt. The second is conceded.

Meyer 2 Up Through 3

 

Hole 4: Par 4, 440 Yards

Meyer finds a bunker left at 175 to the green. He goes from bunker to bunker, finding sand front greenside.

Carlson’s tee shot is left into the second bunker, forty yards ahead.

Meyer goes from bunker to bunker, finding sand front greenside. His bunker shot catches the upslope and rolls away. He has a long putt ahead.

Carlson’s first putt is long, and close to the hole. Meyer concedes the putt. Meyer’s putt is well past the hole.

Meyer 1 Up Through 4

 

Hole 5: Par 4, 489 Yards

Carlson is 180 from the green in the left fairway. Meyer is 200 out in the right fairway.

Meyer’s second is to the back left. Carlson’s is to the left side of the green. His putt rolls away from the hole. Meyer makes his birdie putt.

Hole 6: Par 4, 305 Yards

Meyer’s tee shot is down the middle, just short of the right greenside bunker complex. Carlson drives the sharply uphill green.

The second for Meyer lands behind the hole on an upslope. Carlson’s long putt starts high left, curves right and just misses. Meyer concedes the putt and then makes a tricky downhill shot.

Meyer 2 Up Through 6

 

Hole 7: Par 4, 450 Yards

Meyer hits a long shot to the center of the fairway left of the pond. Carlson lays up short of the pond.

Carlson’s second finds a bunker back left. Meyer’s skips well off the back.

The chip for Meyer curves around the hole and glides ten feet past. Carlson’s bunker shot is similarly wide.

Meyer misses his first putt. The second is conceded. Carlson’s putt is long. His second is in.

Meyer 2 Up Through 7

 

Hole 8: Par 4, 486 Yards

Meyer hits it to 210 from the green. Carlson is 185 away. The green is at the top of a steep hill.

The second for Meyer is on an uphill slope in rough behind the green. Carlson mishits and sends the ball right, over the crowd and down the hill to the rough on the right side of the first fairway. He lobs the ball up and over the hill, catching the grass above the green.

Meyer’s chip runs away toward the green front. He’s still away. His putt misses. Carlson concedes.

Carlson’s chip is long, high and away. He holes the long putt.

Meyer 2 Up Through 8

 

Hole 9: Par 3, 170 Yards

Meyer is on the green on the lower tier. Carlson is on a slight slope not far away.

An uphill putt from Meyer slides just pass. Carlson also just misses. He then holes the putt and concedes Meyers’.

Horns blow. Dangerous weather in the area.

Play resumes around 4:10 pm.

 

Hole 10: Par 4, 445 Yards

Meyer is a little outside the left bunker, with 200 left to the uphill green. Carlson lands on the left side of the fairway, 145 out.

The second from Meyer is in a bunker to the right of the green. He has short sided himself. Carlson hits to the left of center of the green.

Carlson is away. He putts to tap in range.

Meyer leaves his bunker shot short. He hits the fringe and sinks in the tall grass. Now he needs to sink the chip. Meyer pulls the flag. It’s a near miss.

Hole 11: Par 4, 459

Carlson drives the end of the fairway bend near the right side bunker around 160 out. Meyer drives it left to 180.

The second for Carlson lands near the flag, but runs downhill toward the front of the green. His uphill putt slide by.

Meyer flubs his first chip from the grass. His second misses, swirling around the hole. Carlson’s putt is conceded.

All Square Through 11

 

Hole 12: Par 5, 555 Yards

Carlson is wide right, under trees some 200 out. Meyer is in the middle of the fairway.

There no straight path to the green, so Carlson decides to play through an opening that will take him to the right of the green toward the sixteenth tee. The shot hits leaves on a tree, but muscles through. The shot leaves him in thick rough 50 yards right of the green, with a long angle in. His high lob sticks at three feet to the hole.

Meyer’s second was ten yards short of the green. His shot up nearly holes out, but slides by.

Carlson drains the putt. Meyer lips out.

Carlson 1 Up Through 12

 

Hole 13: Par 3, 197 Yards

Carlson is in the bunker front left. Meyer’s tee shot lands on the green above the hole.

The bunker shot from Carlson rolls long. His comeback putt also is long.

Meyer sinks his putt.

All Square Through 13

 

Hole 14: Par 4, 505 Yards

Meyer hits to 225 out. Carlson is twenty yards closer, but in thick rough.

Meyer’s ball rolls off the back of the green into a mowed collection area. Carlson’s also goes off the back, into thick rough.

Carlson hits a perfect chip with a nine iron. It rolls into the hole. Meyer misses his chip.

Carlson 1 Up Through 14

 

Hole 15: Par 4, 394 Yards

Meyer is short of the center-of-fairway bunkers. Carlson blows his tee shot right over them.

The second for Meyer is to the back left. From 70 yards, Carlson stuffs his shot to three feet.

Meyer’s first putt is well past the hole to the fringe. His second putt misses.

Meyer concedes the hole.

Hole 16: Par 4, 303 Yards

The tee has been moved up a considerable distance today. Carlson, using an iron, flies the left side of the pond to the center of the fairway on the other side. Meyer carries the pond and ends up in the rough on the far side of the fairway. Both are no more than 70 yards away.

Meyer’s pitch is to the back of the green. Carlson hits it close. Meyer’s putt rolls past, but he makes the comebacker. Carlson’s putt lips out.

Carlson 2 Up Through 16

 

Hole 17: Par 3, 240 yards

Both players hit their tee shots to the right side of the green. The hole is on the left on a lower tier. Meyer is away. His first putt is 8 feet past. Carlson’s is close. Meyer misses his next putt.

Meyer concedes the match.

Carlson wins 3 Up
