2014 Mackenzie – Dye Championship

The University of Michigan’s two golf courses last year instituted a bragging-rights competition known as the MacKenzie-Dye Championship. The winner take the “Trueblood Cup.”

Alister MacKenzie is the architect of the University Course, which is located across the street from Michigan Stadium (aka The Big House) near downtown Ann Arbor. Pete Dye is the architect of the University’s Radrick Farms Golf Course, located on the east side of town between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Thomas Trueblood organized and coached the University of Michigan golf team. His record as a coach was 71-9-2; not bad for a guy who didn’t take up golf until he was 40.

The competition consists of a 36 hole qualifier, in which participants schedule and play one round at each course, using a bogey-par scoring format. The top two scores in each flight move onto the Team Competition. That consists of 36 holes of singles, and a final best ball / four ball match at Radrick Farms.

The $125 entry fee includes a gift box, and reduced rate practice rounds. Players who qualify for the team competition get a team polo, three greens fees, and a dinner. The overall champions get tickets to a UM game, a tailgate and field access to the football pregame.

This is not going to be my year to play in this, but perhaps the next (as an alum, I think I’m eligible to play for the University Course team).
