2015 Awards Highlight Golf Association of Michigan Annual Meeting

The Golf Association of Michigan will honor Richard Topp and the late Jerry Walker Monday, May 4 at the GAM Annual meeting.

Topp is the GAM President Emeritus and a longtime GAM Governor and Committee member. Walker also was a GAM governor and served as a rules official.

In addition, the GAM will award

  • The James D. Standish Jr. Awards to David Pawlak and Eric Shomo. Pawlak is the University of Michigan Evans Scholar Award Recipient and Shomo the Michigan State University Evans Scholar Award Recipient. The award, established in 1968, is given each year to the outstanding upperclassman at the two universities based on scholarship and leadership in chapter affairs. The name of each winner is displayed on a plaque in the scholarship houses on the two campuses.
  • The GAM Club Representative of the Year Award to Rick Corona of Gowanie Golf Club. Club Representatives represent member clubs and courses for the GAM and are critical to the function of the volunteer-powered GAM.
  • The GAM Superintendent Award of Merit to Jay Eccleton of Emerald Golf Course in St. Johns

New officer appointments also will be announced at the annual meeting. Jim Kohl of Meadowbrook Country Club, the 2014 president, will serve in that role for a final day. Thomas Bollinger, 2014 vice-president, longtime GAM Governor and rules official from Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden, will be introduced as the 2015 president.

Founded in 1919, the Golf Association of Michigan is the governing body for amateur golf in the state. As a not-for-profit organization, the GAM’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf. The GAM, served by over 250 dedicated volunteers as well as nine full-time staff, provides membership to more than 55,000 golfers and more than 470 Michigan golf courses, conducts over 30 amateur championships, oversees 15 USGA qualifying events, administers the GAM/USGA Handicap System and measures and rates almost 70 courses a year for the USGA.
