STILL RAINING: Michigan Amateur Championship Considering Monday Finish

GRAND RAPIDS – After more than six inches of rain Friday and Saturday at Cascade Hills Country Club, play in the 110th Michigan Amateur Championship was suspended until Sunday.

Just two matches were completed in a brief time frame of play Saturday, and 11 golfers remain involved in match play to determine a champion.

Ken Hartmann, senior director of competitions for the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM), said the hope is to play golf Sunday with a goal of wrapping up the tournament on Monday.

“Course conditions wouldn’t allow us to continue today – there’s just too much standing water throughout the course,” he said. “We’re working closely and tirelessly with Cascade Hills to complete the championship but Mother Nature is not cooperating. I want to thank the maintenance staff at the club for all they have done. The staff of the club has bent over backwards to help in every way possible. Without their efforts we would not have made it this far.”

As the match play bracket stands, two quarterfinal matches have started in the top half of the bracket, and three round of 16 matches are still on the course.

In the two quarterfinals Mike Anderson of Northville is 1-up through nine holes against Colin Sikkenga of Kalamazoo, and James Piot of Canton has a 1-up lead through two holes against Patrick Sullivan of Grosse Pointe.

Grant Haefner of Bloomfield Hills completed a 2 and 1 round of 16 win over Brian Ottenweller of Grand Rapids on Saturday. He awaits a quarterfinal opponent.

Round of 16 matches remaining include Will Anderson of Portage, who has a 1-up lead through 16 holes against Zach Robbins of Grand Rapids, Tyler Rayman of Otsego, who has a 2-up lead through 13 holes against Dan Ellis of East Lansing, and Jimmy Dales of Northville and Tyler Eedy of West Branch are tied through 12 holes.

“We will continue to work with Cascade Hills to complete the championship,” Hartmann said. “The players have been understanding and have played great golf despite trying circumstances and long weather delays.”
