Travis Pointe Country Club Hosting GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur

  ANN ARBOR – Travis Pointe Country Club has hosted several tournaments over the years, including the stars of the LPGA, which makes it a perfect spot for the GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Tuesday and Wednesday, May 28-29.

  The 26th edition of the championship presented by Stifel Investment Services will feature a field of 83 golfers, including most of the state’s top players, and the overall champion will have her name added to the Jeanne L. Myers Trophy.

  In addition to the traditional Mid-Amateur Division of golfers over age 25 where the overall champion will be determined, there is a Senior Division for golfers over 50, and golfers ages 19 to 24 have been added to the field for a sixth consecutive year to play for a title and afford them another GAM playing opportunity.

  Travis Pointe, which from 2016 to 2018 hosted the LPGA Volvik Championship, was designed by Michigan golf architect Bill Newcomb, and opened in 1977. The well-maintained modern course features six sets of tees to fit golfers of all skill levels. It can be played up to 7,326 yards.

  The club has hosted several Golf Association of Michigan championships over the years, including the GAM Championship in 1990 and 2009, the Michigan Amateur Championship in 1993, and the Michigan Women’s Amateur in 1979, as well as several GAM, Michigan PGA and USGA qualifiers.

  Last year at Saginaw Country Club, Midland’s Kimberly Dinh returned from breaking a leg in a January snow skiing accident and rolled to a nine-shot win with a closing 2-under 69. It was her second GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur win, and later in the summer she became the first Michigan golfer to win the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

  Shelly Weiss of Southfield won the Senior Division and Katherine Potter of South Lyon, a Marshall University golfer, won among the 19-24 age group.

  Dinh is not defending this week. By virtue of her U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur win, she is exempt into the U.S. Women’s Open, which also being played this week at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pa.

  Weiss and Potter are returning to defend their titles, and 11-time champion Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett is in the field, as is 2022 champion Chelsea Collura of Riverview.

  Last summer’s Michigan Women’s Amateur Champion, Katie Chipman, now an assistant golf coach at Grand Valley State University, is in the field, and Bridget Boczar, last year’s GAM Women’s Champion, is playing in the 19-24 age group.
