A Round At The University of Michigan Golf Course

I got out today to play a round at the University of Michigan Golf Course. Located directly across the street from the football and basketball stadiums, the course is an Alister Mackenzie and Perry Maxwell design that dates to 1931.

Every time I tee it up at the University course, I ask myself: “Why don’t I play here more often?” The course design is sublime, it is always in terrific condition, the staff treats players well.

The sixth (above) is one of my two favorite holes on the course. A short downhill par four, it seems as though it should be easy — until you get a full look at the greens complex. The green is uphill, and somewhat boomerang shaped, with an upper and lower tier. There’s a bunker in the bend. If you’re on the wrong tier, it’s probably an automatic three putt.

In all, it was a great round, and I’m already looking at my calendar for the next opportunity.
