Adding To My Michigan Golf Course Review Collection

My major project each summer for the last decade has been adding to my Michigan golf course review collection. I try to add ten to fifteen each season. At this point, I’m up to 156 Michigan golf course reviews, along with another thirty or so from other places. I’m actually quite a bit behind on Michigan golf course reviews this summer, having played just eight new courses, but I did manage to get to Bandon Dunes in Oregon, where I played another five. Weather and family circumstances have kept this year’s total down. With rain threatening, I tend to play my local muni rather than drive an hour or two only to be miserable, or rained out. Fortunately, we’re headed into the fall season, when both weather and other situations should improve. On the downside, I’ll be back to work and golf trips will be restricted to weekends.

Here are the new Michigan golf courses I’ve played this summer.

Boyne Mountain’s Alpine Course (photo above).  The Boyne Mountain Alpine Course review  actually has already been published. Alpine, a Bill Newcomb design dating to 1972, is a thoroughly enjoyable course that serves as the home of the annual Michigan Tournament of Champions.

Belvedere, in Charlevoix, recently has been restored.

Belvedere, in Charlevox, is a course that I have played before. However, since I last played, the club discovered the original William Watson plans, and restored the course to its original intent. On my replay, I found a much improved course that should be on the must play list of every fan of classic golf architecture. You can see the Belvedere Restored Golf Course Review at the link.

A-Ga-Ming Golf Course

A-Ga-Ming, near Torch Lake in northern Michigan, is one of four courses belonging to the A-Ga-Ming resort — although the four are somewhat geographically dispersed. It is a resort-style parklands course. A-Ga-Ming is worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Cheboygan Golf Club

The Cheboygan golf club is the local track for residents of Cheboygan, Michigan. It’s not a muni, but has that vibe. It’s also the annual host of the Northern Michigan Open.

White Lake Oaks

White Lake Oaks is one of five courses run by the Oakland County Parks system. There’s nothing fancy here. Just decent, relatively inexpensive golf.

Springfield Oaks

Another of Oakland County’s Parks, Springfield Oaks just might boast the best conditions I have encountered this summer. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are amazing. It’s a short course, at just over 6,000 yards. Very enjoyable.

Copper Hills

Copper Hills, in Oxford, is a 27 hole complex. I played the “Jungle” and the “Marsh.” The par fours really stood out for me. However, Copper Hills’ routing is insane. Getting to a hole on any one nine often involves driving past holes on the other two.

Brentwood Golf Course

I was kind of underwhelmed by Brentwood, which is located in White Lake. Too many houses and power lines.
