If that’s true — and if the AI is any good — there won’t be much call for writers any more. Naturally, that has me a bit concerned.

Out of curiosity, I decided to test one of the AI writing bots out there with the assignment to write a 300 word review of the new Callaway golf Paradym driver.

It is boring.

Most critically, I think it lacks a voice, and is devoid of any real personal input. There is no sense that an actual player tried the club on an actual course — or even a driving range.

I can see the AI programmers overcoming that, though.

At this point, the ChatGPT bot generates the kind of writing I’d expect to see from a freshman in high school, minus the spelling and grammatical mistakes I’d expect to see a high schooler produce.

These AI writing programs will be the bane of teachers like me. If they can produce a basic piece of boring, soulless high school writing. My planned strategy to combat this is to have my student write any essays or short answers in class with paper and pen, and all devices put away.

For what it’s worth, the art at top also is AI generated. I went to an AI art site and asked it to produce an image of a robot on a golf course.
