While all attention was focused on the US Open, here in Michigan, amateur Tom Werkmeister won the Michigan Open. He is just the fifth amateur to win in the 96 years of the Michigan Open.
The 45-year-old amateur shot 13-under through four rounds at The Orchards Golf Club. He edged defending champion Barrett Kelpin by two.
Werkmeister won the Michigan Amateur in 2009.
Werkmeister: “At this point nothing has been better than this. Yes, the Michigan Amateur (in 2009) is 1A probably, but to win this, in this type of field with a bunch of mini-tour players out there, that makes me feel pretty good. It is definitely the highlight.”
Werkmeister will compete in the 102nd Michigan Amateur at Muskegon Country Club June 18-22, 2013.
