There’s an article in todays’ Detroit Free Press on how high fuel costs are forcing yacht owners to stay in dock all summer (my heart bleeds for them, really). And there’s another in the Lufkin (Texas) daily news on how fuel prices are cutting into golf. US News and World Report says that high prices could stall 10 million cars. Dozens of articles sound off about how high fuel prices are cutting short vacations.
What’s $4.50 a gallon gasoline doing to your game?
It really hasn’t gut back on the number of rounds played by your friendly neighborhood GolfBLogger. But it has perhaps influenced where I play them. I used to happily travel to the west side of the state in search of new courses (or favorite old ones) to play at least once a week. Thus far this summer, every round has been at a good local course that charges $15 for 18 holes walking.
However, I have an excuse that goes beyond high gas prices: an 11 year old Oldsmobile minivan with 150,000 miles and a broken air conditioner. I’ve tried not to stray too far from home in it as I grow increasingly paranoid about a breakdown.

It won’t affect me at all, and right now, my club is doing very well. Actually, the couses are running slower because of more play this year. Since our club is non-equity, and has a fixed (no food/bev minimums, no assessments) monthly fee, there are folks leaving the higher priced equity clubs and coming to ours.
I may start riding my bike come cooler days this fall if I can figure out a way to tow my push cart and be safe for the 5 miles from home to club and back.
Luckily, with my weight loss (60 pounds since January)- the golf is not on the chopping block in my household. It is not even close.
I’ve heard the same thing about private planes. A lot of those folks have had to cut back on their fancy jets too. I haven’t cut back on my local golfing but the course is only 2.5 miles up the road so the gas doesn’t have much of an impact on that at least.
