Betting Odds For The Players Championship 2009

In spite of a game that’s obviously not in peak form, Tiger Woods is in place as the 7/2 favorite to win the Player’s Championship this upcoming weekend. Phil Mickelson follows, with the betting odds on him at 10/1.  Then, surprisingly, there’s Sean O’Hair at 25/1. O’Hair has had a good spring, but I wonder if his victory at Quail Hollow this past weekend has led some to overrate him.

Following the top three are Geoff Ogilvy at 28/1; Sergio Garcia and Kenny Perry at 33/1; and Steve Stricker, Paul Casey, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, Hunter Mahan, Camilo Vilelgas at 40/1; Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington and Anthony Kim at 40/1.

What I’m getting from this is that betters think it’s pretty much anyone’s tournament to win.

  1. Sergio Garcia is always overrated, and Kenny Perry is underrated in my opinion. I’m still not sure Perry has what it takes to win a major, though.

  2. Agreed on the Sergio thing. I think people are just bedazzled by his ball striking. But he has to get his emotions and his putting under control before he can be a consistent challenger in big tournaments.

  3. I’m not so sure Sean is overrated.  Out of 10 starts this season, he’s made 9 cuts and has 6 top 10 finishes (already more top 10’s than any other year in his career).  Right now, he’s playing pretty well, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won, and certainly not if he finished top 10.
