Betting Odds For The Quail Hollow Championship

Whatever the merits of the argument that Quail Hollow constitutes a fifth major, its certainly got a stellar field. Tiger Woods is the bettor’s favorite at 11/4, followed by Phil Mickelson at 10/1, Les Westwood, Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim at 20/1, then Camilo Villegas (28/1), Padraig Harrington (33/1), Hunter Mahan (33/1), Nick Watney (33/1),  and the pack of Matt Kuchar, Sean O’Hair, Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy (40/1)

Given his apparent swing difficulties, I find it hard to believe that Tiger is the odds on favorite. Then again, given his struggles on every course this year but Augusta, I find it hard to believe Phil is in at 10/1—although those are much longer odds.

  1. It will be interesting to see if Tiger Woods can maintain being the odds-on favorite for the next tournament after his crash and burn this Friday.

I thought that Tiger was probably 50/50 for winning, just because.  I won’t give him those odds for any of the majors, but I did think he would take one of these non-major tournaments and win by a half dozen or more strokes.

What I didn’t expect was that Tiger would go 71/79 – I don’t care what odds you were giving me, I wouldn’t bet on that.  Not making the cut, maybe – coming in that far back, no.

  2. I think the golf world in general was stunned by those scores. But in retrospect, maybe we should have seen it coming. He rode a wave of good will, worshipfulness and course familiarity at the Masters. But that can’t continue week after week, as the awful realization sinks further that he’s no longer the golden boy. The sight of fans giving him the thumbs down (as shown in several photos) as he passed by has to ahve an effect on him.
