Ever-optimistic bettors have Tiger Woods in a familiar place heading into the 2012 Open Championship: he’s the 8/1 favorite, and is thought to be nearly twice as likely to win as Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, who are in at 14/1.
Rory McIlroy, who heading into this season was hailed as Tiger’s replacement, is in at 16/1, or an effective 5.88% chance to win.
Others that bettors have pegged as serious contenders are Padraig Harrington (20/1), Francesco Molinari, Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose, all at 28/1.
Martin Kaymer, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Louis Oosthuizen are in at 33/1.
If recent history plays out, the winner will be a first time Major winner, so of that gang, Luke Donald, Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose seem most likely.
I’d personally like to see Sergio Garcia win, though. In spite of his history of petulant and sometimes unseemly behavior, I’ve always liked the guy.

Always a tough major to win and the difficulty of the golf course just adds to it.
I’m tipping another 1st time major winner this year. Either Rickie Fowler or Dustin Johnson I think can get the job done. I think Australia’s Adam Scott can do well too.
