Brad Bastion, a Shelby Township banker, won the 2015 Michigan Medal Play Championship Sunday at Pheasant Run Golf Club. Bastion shot a final even-par 108 on Sunday in the tournament for his first win of any kind in competitive golf.

The Michigan Medal Play Championship has a field 104 golfers playing 27 holes each of two days with competition for the championship players as well as an Open Net division and a Senior Scratch division.

“I stumbled on the last nine a little bit and that shows me I’m still learning how to win,” said the 30-year-old Shelby Township licensed banker for J.P. Morgan Securities. “I got the job done, but I had a big lead and let some of it get away.”

Bastion’s 108, which included a 4-over 40 on the final nine, paired with a 7-under 101 from Saturday to give him a 209 tournament total. He was 11-under for the tournament a cruising when he started the final nine holes.

Connor Jones of Lake Orion and Dave Vaclav of Flat Rock finshed second with a 4-under 212. Jason May and Leo Daigle rounded out the top five tied at 215.

In the Senior Scratch division Jackson’s Mike Raymond shot a closing 112 for a final 7-over-par 223. That was two strokes better than Bill VanderMass of Novi, and three better than Mike Fedewa of Canton. Raymond, 61, is director of sales for Highjump Software and a longtime top player in the Jackson area. It was his first Michigan Publinx win.

Matthew Marks of White Lake won his second consecutive Open Net title. The 49-year-old marketing manager for Sabic Innovative Plastics had a net 101 for a 203 total, just one shot better than Steven Szymanski of Troy and four better than David Fagan of Warren. Szymanski and Marks started the final round tied for second behind Fagan by one shot.
