Brewdog Bushwood Beer Review

Teacher’s Comments: My crack team of beer drinkers had mixed thoughts on the brew.

I recently acquired a box of Brewdog Bushwood Caddyshack Beer for review and shared it with my crack team of beer drinkers for review.

The beer’s name is of course, a reference to the country club in the classic golf movie Caddyshack. The course on which the movie was filmed is Grand Oaks in Davie, Florida although it was called Rolling Hills Country Club at the time. The fictional club was based on the Indian Hill Club in Illinois where the Murray brothers caddied.

Bushwood Beer is a product of Brewdog, a brewery and pub chain based in Ellon, Scotland.

The Brewdog USA brew house is located in Columbus, Ohio.

My beer team had various opinions on the brew. Two quite liked it, said that it was refreshing, and agreed they’d like to drink it after mowing the lawn. Another, however, thought it was just ok. A fourth didn’t really like it.

“It’s beer,” he said.

For my part, I don’t drink a lot of beer, much preferring a hard cider in its place. I thought it was good enough.

There seems to be no end to variety of beer available these days. Ann Arbor has at least a dozen brewpubs, each of which has its signature and experimental brews. In visiting these, I have noticed that one person’s pleasure is another’s poison. Drinker A says “this is great,” and Drinker B says “yuk.”

I think that’s what was going on with the Bushwood. It’s a Pilsner style beer, and some folk just don’t like a Pilsner. If you like Pilsners, you are more likely to be inclined to like it.

Here’s what Brewdog says about the Bushwood Beer:

Caddyshack in a can. Bushwood Beer, the light and fresh beer that’s crushable on the course. This light-colored straw lager features a creamy white head and moderate carbonation. Hop additions give Bushwood Beer a light grassy, lemon character, balanced by a sweet malt aroma. At a 5% ABV, you’ll be able to scamper along and play at least 9 holes. Don’t worry, it’s good luck!

Calories per 12 oz. can: 142. Carbs: 12.5g.

If you see Brewdog’s Bushwood beer in a store and enjoy the beer style, give it a try.
