Buick Open Hosts Pursue Champions Tour Event

When the Buick Open holed out for the last time in 2009, Michigan lost its last professional tournament. Now, the host, Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club is setting its sights on hosting a Champions Tour event. The hope is to have one in place for 2013—but it all hinges on finding a major sponsor.

Luckily, Champions Tour events are much less expensive than the regular Tour, with purses of a third to a half as large. That should make it a somewhat easier task. Maybe they can get Kid Rock involved. He and John Daly reportedly had quite the good time at the Buick Open.

Warwick Hills is a very nice golf venue. I visited the Buick Open a couple of times and enjoyed myself immensely. You can see some photos of the course here.

Michigan’s last Champions Tour event was the Ford Senior Championship, which closed shop in 2006. That also was a lot of fun.

I know that the Detroit Golf Club hopes to land a PGA Tour event in the next year or two, but I don’t there would be any conflict here, assuming that the events are not too closely scheduled. But then, since both are ultimately run by the PGA Tour, that wouldn’t happen.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
