Bunkers Come Into Play At Open Championship

There are 112 bunkers on the Old Course and I watched quite a few of them come into play today. I was amazed at the number of players I saw who had to hit the ball backwards, or sideways out of the sand.

At one pont, Vijay, with his ball nestled up against a sod wall, turned his club over and tapped it backward toward the front of the bunker. His only other choice was to declare an unplayable lie. From further back, he was able to make a remarkable shot to the green.

Quite a change from 200, when Tiger played the tournament without getting into a bunker. The extra length has really brought the bunkers back into play.

Of course, Tiger still is leading.
