Can Rory McIlroy Regain The World Number One Spot?

Rory McIlroy is one of the most recognisable names in golf and has been for a number of years. The 28 year old is a four-time major winner and is also one of only four players, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Jordan Spieth, to have won three majors by the age of 25. The former world number one has also amassed a bounty of personal accolades and achievements over the course of his career so far but can he ever get back to his best and reclaim top spot?

Right now McIlroy sits in 6th place in the official rankings. He’s behind Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm. You’d probably look at it and say that if he could put together some sort of form, we may once again see the McIlroy of old whose success for the most part seemed to come naturally. You’d also probably look at McIlroy sat in 6th and think that for a player who possess such great golfing ability that it’s ridiculous that he’s so far down the rankings, especially as he has spent 95 weeks at the top over the course of his career.

McIlroy has been looking to get back on track for a while and many expected to him to get back into his stride once again this year. He was struck down by injury though and this has really been one of the main reasons he’s found himself struggling once again. At the South African Open he had a rib issue which went on to manifest itself in back spasms and pain. These sorts of problems hinder McIlroy greatly as he has specific workout regimes that he follows to help him form and to be able to produce his game. Recurring niggles, especially in the back, mean he simply can’t work out or work out as efficiently.

The reality is that McIlroy first of all has to get fully fit, there can be no half measures. If he’s to rediscover his Midas touch he has to do so when he’s 100% fit. It’s potentially the only way for him to get back to his best but if he was to get back into top condition, it’s definitely a realistic possibility that he would start to climb the rankings once again by winning a major or two. Either way McIlroy still remains a huge golfing star but the fans, on both tours, are desperate to see the McIlroy of old. We all know that golf could always use more exciting players, which good for the sport and everyone connected including sports betting operators like Unibet, sponsors, tv viewership and ratings etc.

There’s still plenty to aim for where Rory McIlroy is concerned and that may be the driving force which sees him rise to the top once again. Alongside a new caddie next year, he will know that he can still become the greatest ever European golfer of all time by surpassing the achievements of Nick Faldo. Faldo won 6 majors, Gary Player won 9 and neither are beyond McIlroy at his very best. It’s these sorts of record breaking opportunities that motivate top sportsmen and McIlroy will be no different.
