Teachers’ Comments: Pleasant.

Cheboygan Golf and Country Club is a pleasant community golf course located on the outskirts of the small town of Cheboygan, Michigan. If I lived in Cheboygan, or one of the nearby communities, I would be more than happy to play at Cheboygan Golf Club on a regular basis. It is a friendly course at a decent price. As a vacationer, however, there are other courses drawing my attention.

Cheboygan Golf and Country Club dates to 1922. Designed by Art Pryor, the course was updated in 1990 at a cost of $400,000. As you would expect from an old school design, it is relatively tight and eminently walkable.

The front nine at Cheboygan Golf Club is open and largely treeless. A stretch of the Little Black River runs through that nine, creating a steep gully and water hazard that comes into play on the first, seventh, eighth and ninth holes. The few thick stands of trees on that nine line the river.

The back nine at Cheboygan is tree-lined, looking much more like a traditional Northern Michigan golf course. In contrast to the front nine, this side incorporates a number of interesting dog legs.

Cheboygan GC’s fifth is a 160 yard par 3.

From the back tees, Cheboygan Golf Club stretches to 6, 003 yards and plays to a 69.3/120. The middle tees are in at 5, 583 and a 67.4/114. The red tees measure 4, 600 and play 66.4/114.

The fairways on both nines are generous, while the greens are relatively small. That makes for some challenging target golf. Cheboygan Golf and Country Club would be a good course to visit to get your mid irons and short game in shape.

A view of the eleventh green

My favorite hole was the 374 yard par 4 eleventh. Playing slightly downhill through tall stands of trees, the hole doglegs left after around 220 yards. The approach shot must carry a segment of the Little Black River (little more than a large creek, really) to a small green.

The twelfth at Cheboygan GC is a 334 yard par 4.

Conditions on the day I played were mixed. The greens were in good shape, but the fairways were inconsistent. They were in turn sparse, lush, soggy and shaggy. To be fair, though, I have played courses with far worse conditions in Northern Michigan for twice the price. There was nothing in the conditions that cost me strokes or gave me more than a moment’s pause. I also think I might not have noticed the conditions had I been riding a cart rather than walking.

While I was at Cheboygan Golf and Country Club, I was impressed by the large number of kids and parents that were participating in a junior golf program that took over the practice green and driving range. Although not a muni, Cheboygan Golf and Country Club is clearly a place that works to serve the community — and not incidentally, groom future customers.

If you are vacationing in the Cheboygan area and want to get in a pleasant, low-key round of golf, I can recommend Cheboygan Golf and Country Club.
