Welsh golfer Dai Rees played in a total of nine Ryder Cups, amassing a record of 7-10-1. That score is better than it appears at first glance, given the sometimes lopsided victories of the US Ryder Cup team throughout his playing career.
Rees also captained the Ryder Cup team five times: 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1967.
The 1957 Ryder Cup was significant. As player-captain, Rees led the team to its only Ryder Cup victory between 1934 and 1984.
In other tournament golf, Rees won 39 times, mostly in Europe. His first was in 1935; his last, 1966. Rees’ longevity was remarkable. Born in 1913, his career extended to the first few seasons of the European Tour, which launched in 1972.
