Daly Has Good Weekend

John Daly has gotten a lot of laughs and looks of disgust for his behavior and game the last couple of years, so I thought I’d point out that he had a very good weekend at the Greenbriar. He finished in a t12, 6 back of the winner. He shot a 65 on Sunday, and I saw no recorded instances of a meltdown.

It may also be worth noting that he finished t12 in a weekend when Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk (among other notables) missed the cut.

The Tour would be a little more interesting if Daly were to show up on the leaderboard occasionally.

  1. He is playing next weekend too.

Last year he was 33% on making PGA cuts, with 6 of 18.

This year, he is 5 for 6 attempts.  And he is playing next weekend too.

As I was looking up his current stats, I was also surprised by this fact: when making the cut, he has shown improvement in finishing all year.  His first two tournaments were T51 and T52.  Then he missed his cut.  4th he was T41.  In Memphis #5, he was T19 with a 64 on Sunday (tied low round for the day I think).  Then today he was T12 with a 65 on Sunday.

Compared to last year, this is stunning.  He did have a T9 at RBC Canada last year, but the rest were well in the back of the pack.

Also, he has the same percentage of cuts made/missed at Eldrick Woods.

  2. Yes it would be more interesting if he were to be a lot more competitive. There’s no doubt the guy still has a lot to offer professional golf. We only hope performances like this continue to be a regular thing for the ‘wild thing’.

  3. He is in the field for the British.  He is exempt in the British until he is 60 (14 years)

I was reading elsewhere that’s good finish this weekend might put him high enough on the money list to get his card back.  He is 156 now I think.

  4. It’s possible, if there’s a sponsor’s exemption available.

There might be one for the Scottish one coming up as well (Phil Mickelson just got in on an invite).
