Dan Ellis, Jimmy Dewling Repeat Winners in GAM Four-Ball Championship
LANSING – Brighton’s Jimmy Dewling said the GAM Four-Ball Championship is circled on the calendar each year.
“It gets us together to play golf,” said the Brighton High School golf coach and real-estate broker of teaming up with former Michigan State University golf teammate Dan Ellis, the associate head coach for the MSU men’s golf team.
Dewling, 30, and Ellis, 31, a pair of overpowering long ball hitters, shot a morning wave winning 8-under 62 at Country Club of Lansing Monday and also won the overall GAM Four-Ball title for the third time and second consecutive year.
A pair of junior golf standouts, Carter Housler of Lansing and PJ Maybank III of Cheboygan, teamed up to shoot 63 and finish second to Dewling and Ellis in the morning and overall.
In the afternoon wave, which had to weather some rain and wind, the accountants from Kalamazoo, Nick Carbary and Jack Versau, shot a 64 to win first place. Carbary and Versau were the overall winners in 2019.
Dov Lustig of West Bloomfield and Anthony Sorentino of Rochester Hills teamed up for a 65 to take second in the afternoon.
Ellis said he bows to Dewling’s ability to hit the longest drives, though both are well known as long hitters.
“I used to be known as that, and I’ve played a lot of best-balls where I hit last but with Jimmy I hit first a lot, especially on a golf course I’ve played a 100 times,” he said. “We started off a little slow, but then we made some putts and did our thing. I played a regular round at Country Club of Lansing and let’s put it this way – Jimmy is there when you need him. That’s the best way to describe it. He hits the shots you need to attack the golf course.”
They met freshman year at Michigan State on the golf team and remain partial to competition and having teammates.
“It’s not hard to be around each other,” Ellis said. “We’ve played in a few things, did the USGA Four-Ball and we get together in this. It’s fun to get the juice going and to play and see how low we can go.”
Carbary, 32, and Versau, 31, said 8-under was possible, but they missed a few good birdie chances and got off to a slow start as two brief periods of rain fell.
“Jack holed a sand shot on the par 3 (No. 4) and that got us going, changed the momentum,” Carbary said. “We birdied three of the next four and played solid the rest of the way.”
Versau said 9-under to win might night have been in the cards.
“It turned out to be a nice evening and we probably should have gotten to eight, but we feel good about winning the afternoon,” he said. “Those guys that shot 8-under this morning – that’s pretty strong.”
