Eight Michigan Golf Courses Among Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public

Forest Dunes Fourteenth Hole 464 yard par 4

Eight Michigan courses have made Golf Digest’s list of the 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses.

They are:

14. Arcadia Bluffs

33. Forest Dunes

52. Arcadia Bluffs (South)

54. Point O’ Woods*

59. The Loop (Black)

63. Bay Harbor (Links/Quarry)

67. Greywalls

78. The Loop (Red)

Point O’ Woods gets an asterisk because Golf Digest4D removed it from the list after publication. The private course has apparently eliminated its stay-and-play packages that permitted public play.

I have been fortunate to have played all of these, and six of them more than once. Click on the links for my reviews. You can read all of GolfBlogger’s Michigan Golf Course Reviews at the link.

For my part, while I appreciate the compelling nature of Arcadia Bluff’s vistas, I think Forest Dunes is the better course. I know that will outrage a lot of people and I don’t care.

For that matter, Greywalls’ views can be just as spectacular, and I enjoyed the course more.

That’s not to say that Arcadia doesn’t belong on the list. I just don’t think it is tops in the state.

I’ll also quibble a bit with Arcadia South. It’s a fine course, but I’m not particularly anxious go to back. On the other hand, I’ll play Boyne’s Heather or Hills any time I get the chance. Ditto Black Lake. And Sweetgrass. I’d play any of those before Arcadia South.

Going forward, I think American Dunes is going to get some serious traction in the “best of” lists. It is definitely the linksy style of course they prefer.

I’d love to know what eight Michigan golf courses you would have in the Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses. Leave a comment.
