With a 14-14 Tie, Europe has retained the Solheim Cup.
Carlota Ciganda’s 2 and 1 win over Nelly Korda in the penultimate singles match gave Europe the point it needed to tie the US team and retain the Solheim Cup they had won 15-13 at Inverness Club in Ohio in 2021.
The European squad was denied an outright win when Lexi Thompson beat Emily Pederson 2 and 1 in the last match of the event.
This was the first tie in the Solheim Cup’s eighteen year history.
The US had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening foursomes on Friday. Europe fought back in Friday afternoon’s fourballs to bring the score to 5-3 at the end of the day. The sides tied in Saturday morning foursomes 2-2, but Europe managed to win three of four Saturday afternoon fourballs to tie the overall score at 8-8.
In Sunday Singles, two matches ended in a tie, while the US and Europe each won five matches. Final score was 14-14.
The next Solheim Cup matches are September 13-15, 2024 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainsville, Virginia. It is being held in consecutive years to get the event back to being played in even years. As with so many things, the Pandemic wrecked the Solheim Cup scheduling.
I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Solheim Cup matches at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio in 2021 and wrote quite a bit about my experiences. It was a terrific experience and if you’re in the area in Virginia next year, I highly recommend you take a day and go.
