A look at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic
Starting the final round trailing a trio of leaders (John Merrick, Davis Love III, Nick O’Hern) by one shot, Dustin Johnson carded a 4-under 66 to win by one shot over Merrick at 9-under 271.
Rory McIlroy, Chad Campbell and Nick O’Hern, three of the four who had a chance to tie Johnson’s eventual winning score with a birdie, knocked their tee shots on the 72nd hole into the water hazard left of the fairway.

With his win in Memphis last year, Johnson became the first player since Tiger Woods (1996-2000) to go directly from college and win in each of his first five seasons (2008-12). This year, Johnson extended the streak to six seasons with his seventh PGA TOUR victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Leads players in their 20s with seven career PGA TOUR wins. Players under the age of 30 with three or more victories on the PGA TOUR: Dustin Johnson (7), Rory McIlroy (6), Anthony Kim (3), Webb Simpson (3), Keegan Bradley (3).
Totaled nine top-10 finishes in 2012, including top 10s in each of the four FedExCup Playoff events. Johnson would finish the 2012 season eighth in the final FedExCup standings.
In 2013, Johnson has a victory at the rain-shortened Hyundai Tournament of Champions and a T4 at the Shell Houston Open in 11 starts. He was forced to withdraw twice this season due to a back injury (Sony Open in Hawaii, THE PLAYERS Championship) and missed the cut last week at the Memorial Tournament.

Player notes
World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson will make his third start in Memphis, and first since 2009 (T59). Mickelson missed the cut in his first start in Memphis in 2001. Mickelson returns to Memphis this week with one win this season (Waste Management Phoenix Open) and two third-place finishes (World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship, Wells Fargo Championship).
Nashville resident and reigning FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker makes his seventh start in his home-state event. Snedeker, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am earlier this year and is third in the FedExCup standings, missed last year’s event due to a rib injury. He is one of four players with six top-10 finishes in 2013.
Billy Horschel, winner of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this year, made his professional debut at the 2009 FedEx St. Jude Classic. He is fifth in the current FedExCup standings.
TOUR rookie Luke Guthrie made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic, finishing T19. Guthrie is 54th in the FedExCup standings with top-10 finishes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (T8) and The Honda Classic (3).
Following extensive left wrist surgery, two-time PGA TOUR winner Paul Goydos makes a return to competition this week. Playing on a Major Medical Extension, he will have 21 events to earn $590,290, which coupled with 2012 earnings of $57,220 would equal No. 125 from the 2012 money list. Goydos has not competed on TOUR since the 2012 Northern Trust Open last February (missed cut). He is one of just five players to post a 59 in a competitive round on the PGA TOUR, having achieved the feat in round one of the 2010 John Deere Classic.
Special Temporary Member Jordan Spieth, who began the season with no PGA TOUR status, finished T7 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial to earn a top-10 exemption into the FedEx St. Jude Classic. The finish at the Crowne Plaza event was his fourth top-10 finish in 2013. Spieth, with $919,079 in earnings and 469 Non-member FedExCup Points, is on track to earn his 2013-14 PGA TOUR card.
Fourteen-year-old Sponsor Exemption Guan Tianlang caught the attention of the golfing world at the Masters Tournament, which he qualified for by virtue of winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. The youngest player to ever compete at Augusta, the teen made the cut and finished 58th. Since then, he has competed at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (71), HP Byron Nelson Championship (missed cut) and the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide (MC).
Sponsor Exemption Steven Fox, a native of Hendersonville, Tenn., won the 2012 U.S. Amateur title. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior has missed the cut in all four of his PGA TOUR starts in 2013. He recently earned PING All-East Region honors for the second consecutive year in 2012-13.
FedEx St. Jude Classic miscellaneous notes
No player has ever won a PGA TOUR event and then gone on to win the U.S. Open the following week.
A total of eight players have won a PGA TOUR event and gone on to win a major championship the following week, most recently Tiger Woods in 2007 (World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship).
In the 55-year history of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, only six players have claimed the event as their first PGA TOUR victory, most recently Harrison Frazar in 2011, the first player to do so since Dicky Pride in 1994.
Since the event’s inception, only four international players (five victories) have won the FedEx St. Jude Classic: Gary Player (1974), Nick Price (1993, 1998), Greg Norman (1997) and Lee Westwood (2010).
With his victory at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic, Dustin Johnson became the first player under the age of 30 to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic since Notah Begay in 2000.

John Merrick (2) and Davis Love III (T3) were the only players to post four rounds in the 60s at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic.
Since moving to TPC Southwind in 1989, the third-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic 11 times, most recently Brian Gay in 2009.
