Flushing’s Kerrigan Parks Wins Second Consecutive Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur Championship

YPSILANTI – Kerrigan Parks made an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to top Jami Laude of Ann Arbor 1-up in final match of the 39th Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur presented by Pepsi at Washtenaw Golf Club Wednesday.

It was the second consecutive year that Parks won the Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur championship .

“It was a great match, back and forth,” Parks said. “Jami was 2-up early, and then it went back and forth to 18 when I made the putt. It feels awesome. Winning two in a row lets me know all my hard work has paid off and that what I’m doing must be working. I just have to keep practicing and keep getting better.”

Parks, who turns 18 next month, said she is fond of match play.

“Because if I make an 8 it is okay,” she said. “It only hurts you one hole.”

Parks, who said she will continue her golf career in West Virginia at Marshall University, beat Danielle Staskowski of Clarkston 2 and 1 in the semifinals. Laude advanced to the finals with a 20-holes win over Moyea Russell of Lake Orion.

A field of 94 golfers played for the championship, and a winner was also crowned in the 15-and-under bracket.

Nicole Whatley of Northville scored a 2-up win over Anci Dy of Traverse City in the final match of the 15-and-under competition.

Whatley beat Shannon Kennedy of Beverly Hills 3 and 2 in one semifinal. In the other Dy beat Allison Cui of Okemos 1-up.

In conjunction with the tournament, the GAM Foundation awarded a $250 scholarship to Jack Boczar. He was selected by host Washtenaw’s club leadership. Boczar, whose family has a long standing at the club, and whose sisters played in the tournament, is going to the University of Toledo. The GAM Foundation is dedicated to helping youth in life and golf.
