Teacher’s Comments: Nothing but ingredients you can identify and pronounce.

With the SuperBowl approaching, I thought I’d give a shout-out to my favorite brand of salsa: Garden Fresh.

Made in Ferndale, Michigan since 1998, Garden Fresh recently was sold to Campbells’, so it should be available nationwide. Hopefully, the fresh ingredients and taste will remain.

Garden Fresh comes in a variety of flavors, but Thick and Chunky is my favorite. It’s got a burst of spicy and interesting flavors, while avoiding the sort of burn that overwhelm the tomato, garlic and green peppers.

One of the things I like best about Garden Fresh salsa is that it has ingredients I can clearly identify and pronounce. Here are the ingredients in the order listed on the label: Tomatoes, onions, green peppers, jalapenos, vinegar, lime juice, cilantro, salt, dehydrated celery, cane sugar, fresh garlic, spices, citric acid.

You can see most of those ingredients right in the tub. There are chunks of tomato, slivers of tomato and pepper and other visible ingredients. Unlike a lot of other store-bought salsas, Garden Fresh is not a suspicious-looking puree.

Unfortunately, my photos just can’t do any justice to the color and chunky texture of the salsa.

I’m going to have two tubs of this ready for the Super Bowl tomorrow. At least one I’ll just eat straight out of the tub with a spoon.
