Forest Akers West Hosting 41st Michigan Girls Junior State Amateur
EAST LANSING – Forest Akers Golf Club’s West Course is hosting host the Michigan Girls’ Junior State Amateur for the sixth time in its history.
The 41st edition of the tournament, presented by Pepsi Sunday through Wednesday, will included the top girl junior golfers in the state playing two rounds of stroke play to determine the low 36 scorers who will then play four rounds of match play over two more days to determine a champion. A 15-and-under division is also being presented. A total of 90 junior golfers are in the field.
Forest Akers West is home to the successful Michigan State University golf teams. It is one of two courses at the facility (East and West), both of which were redesigned by Michigan State alumnus and highly regarded golf course designer Arthur Hills in 1992. The West plays from 5,278 yards to 7,013 yards with five tee positions and hosts the Big Ten home competition for the Spartans.
The players in the field are familiar with the Forest Akers properties, which have hosted several GAM junior events as well as high school state championship tournaments over the years. Learn more at golf.msu.edu.
The top golfers on the GAM Honor Roll in 2018 are in the field including Danielle Staskowski of Clarkston, Jasmine Ly of Madison Heights, Allison Cui of Okemos, Ariel Chang of Macomb, Lilia Henkel of Grand Rapids, Jolie Brochu of Goodrich, Anci Dy of Traverse City, Savannah Haque of Rochester Hills, Shannon Kennedy of Beverly Hills, Kay Zubkus of Ada, Nicole Whatley of Northville, Rachel Hu of Northville, Alissa Fish of Clark Lake and Hillary Ziemba of Jackson.
The championship has a storied past with winners like Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member and LPGA Tour player Suzy Green-Roebuck, LPGA Tour player Stacy Snider, and recent Michigan Women’s Amateur champions Aya Johnson and Kerri Parks.
