FORRRRE! – Card Game for Golfers
Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: Fun.
Forrrre! is a fun little golf-themed card game that would make a perfect stocking stuffer. If you buy it using the Amazon link above, you can still get it in time for Christmas.
As with regular golf, the goal of the game is to score as low as possible. The cards consist of scoring cards, marked Bogey, Par, Birdie, Eagle and Hole In One and; event cards, such as Out of Bounds, Shanks, Mulligans, Gopher, Lightening, and Forrrre! On each turn, players attempt to either play scoring cards from their hands into one of four “slots” in front of them or to place an event card on an opponent or on themselves. A round ends when one player has all four cards filled with scoring cards. At that point, players tally their scores for the cards in front of them and move on to the next round. The game moves very quickly, and players can get in quite a few rounds in a sitting.
The cards are colorful, glossy and of the same level of quality that you find in single deck card games sold in the toy sections of card stores, such as Rook and Skip Bo. The rules are on a single card and are easily understood.
I’m actually a “hard core” gamer, having cut my teeth on Avalon Hill wargames and now playing Euro style games such as The Settlers of Catan and Dominion. For hobby gamers such as I, Forrrre! won’t satisfy as the main fare, but it’s a nice diversion or a filler between games. If I were to make a couple of changes to improve the game, it would be to add to the variety and complexity of the event cards.
