Garmin Approach G7 Golf GPS

Garmin 010-01230-00 Approach G7 Golf Course GPS

This spring, Garmin will release two handheld golf GPS units: The Approach G7 and the Approach G8.

The Approach G7, at $299, is the cheaper of the two units. It has a 1.4” x 2.2” (3.6 x 5.5 cm); 2.6” diag TFT reflective touchscreen with a 160 x 240 pixels resolution. Inside is a rechargable lithium battery.

The unit has some interesting features:

  • Plays like Distance Gives The Golfer Distances To The Target, Adjusted For Uphill Or Downhill Shots

  • Smart Notification Receive Email, Texts And Alerts From Your Iphone (4S Or Later) Directly On Your Golf Handheld

  • Garmin Connect Online golf community lets you play, then share and compare your round

  • Club Advice Remembers how far you hit each club, and provides recommendations on which club to use based on your shot distances

  • Big Numbers Mode For easy viewing on your screen, increase the font size for distances to the front, back and middle of the greens

With the “Plays Like” feature, I wonder if it is usable in competition. I also seriously question the need for notifications from the phone. Don’t we play the game to get away from the world?
