Gary Player says Michigan is “the home of golf in America.”

“Michigan – What a state for golf. I must say that it is the home of golf in America,” Player said in a recent television interview.

That’s high praise, given the competition. Michigan’s claim, however, lies not only in the quality of courses like Oakland Hills, Crystal Downs and Indianwood, but in sheer volume of more than 800 public courses. Michiganders often don’t realize just how blessed we are in golf.

Sadly, the PGA TOUR has been absent from this golf mecca since the Buick Open rolled up its last tent in 2009. The Champions’ Tour’s Ford Senior Players Championship at the TPC Dearborn ended in 2006.

Player agrees that top level golf needs to return to Michigan: “Michigan is a great state for golf. They really deserve a Major Championship because they have done so much for the sport.”

The LPGA is coming to Michigan this summer. I wonder what it would take to get a PGA TOUR or Champions TOUR event to return to Michigan. I certainly stand ready to do whatever a GolfBlogger can do to make it so.
