Golf In A Plague Year April 28: Returning

This week on the PGA TOUR, we’re missing the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. The European Tour would have played the Andalucia Masters at Real Club Valderrama (how’s that for a mouthful). This was an off week for the LPGA.

Here in Michigan, my golf life began returning to normal. The governor okayed golf last week, and I got in a round at my home muni, Green Oaks, on its re-opening day. The course was quite busy, but everyone I saw was maintaining proper distance.

Green Oaks was doing things right. Tee times and payment are made online. The course is walking only. Players are restricted to threesomes. Upon arrival, golfers check in by speaking to the pro through the clubhouse window — from a safe distance, of course. Cups are upside down in the holes and flags stayed in. There are no rakes.

The closest I got to another human being was waiting on the first tee box, when I stood some twenty yards back waiting for my time.

I pray that golfers continue to take the distancing seriously. It would only take one busybody posting a photo of clustered golfers on social media to turn the sentiment of the Governor and Attorney General against us.
