Golf News Roundup: Black Widows; Tiger’s Schedule; Drug Testing

LPGA Golfer Bitten By Black Widow

Golf course dangers you’ve never thought about: Daniela Holmqvist of Sweden was bitten by a black widow spider at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open on Monday. The pain apparently immediately dropped her to the ground. Then, with no medical help readily availabile, Holmqvist cut open the bite with a tee! and squeezed out the venom.

“A clear fluid came out, it wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible.”

Tough ladies, those professional golfers.

Tiger Adds Events

Tiger has added three events to his schedule: the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Feb. 20-24 in Marana, Ariz., then The Honda Classic and WGC-Cadillac Championship in Florida. There likely will be at least one more before the Masters. Tiger’s habit has been to play an event two weeks before a Major. If the trend continues, he’ll play the Shell Houston Open. That tournament, seeing an opportunity to attract players warming up for The Masters has over the years done its best to set the course up in a similar fashion to Augusta.

LPGA Opens Season

The LPGA opens its 2013 season at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. The Tour also will make stops in Thailand and Singapore before heading back to the United States for the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup March 14-17 in Phoenix.

Yani Tseng opens the year at #1 in the world rankings with a score of 9.69. Choi Na-yeon is second at 8.48. American Stacy Lewis comes in third at 7.96.

USGA To Begin Drug Testing At US Amateur

An email sent around to US Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championship participants says that drug testing will begin this year.

Heh. I wonder if they test for deer antlers.
