Wilson Staff D7 Irons

Wilson Staff D7 Irons
Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: Powerful and attractive

Wilson is a venerable name in the golf equipment industry, with a history that extends back more than a hundred years. Wilson Staff member Gene Sarazen invented the sand wedge. Willie Ogg, another Wilson Staff member invented the perimeter weighted iron.

That history of innovation is alive today, with the introduction of products such as the D7 Irons. Featuring urethane filled “progressive power holes,” the D7 Irons produce a lot of forgiveness and distance with an attractive look.

Tour Edge C721 Driver

Tour Edge Exotics C721 Driver
Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: Hot face. Low Spin. Fifteen yards longer than my previous driver. Seriously.

Tour Edge is a brand that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. The company consistently produces clubs with cutting edge technology for very reasonable prices.

The Exotics C721 driver features the company’s Diamond Face 2.0 technology. It gets its name from the 43 different diamond shapes of variable thickness behind the face. Each acts as a mini-trampoline, bringing more speed to the outer edges where hackers like me make contact as often as not.

Honma XP-1 Driver

Honma XP-1 Driver
Grade: A
Teachers’ Comments: A lightweight club that rewards a smooth, easy swing.

Honma is known for its ultra premium, high end clubs — their Beres Five Star Driver retails for $4,500.

Fortunately, Honma also offers a high quality, but more reasonably priced line, in their T//World and TR lines.

One of Honma’s big draws is their “holistic design” in which the company does the clubhead and shaft design in-house. That means that the parts are designed from the start to work in harmony.

For a really neat Father’s Day experience, you could schedule a time at one of the Honma Mobile Experience Club fittings.

XXIO X Irons

XXIO X Irons
Grade: A+
Teachers’ Comments: Great feel, good distance, nice ball flight.

The XXIO “X” irons are aimed at good players who are starting to see distance declines in their game. The irons are designed to be lightweight and easy to swing to improve distance while still having the look and feel of a “players club.”

Lots of companies have worked to create lighter weight clubs. What makes XXIO different is that it pays attention to the question of balance point. Each of the clubs has a brass and rubber weight in the butt end of the shaft to encourage an ideal top-of-swing position and swing plane.

Cleveland RTX Zip Core Wedges

Cleveland RTX ZipCore Wedge
Grade: A+
Teacher’s Comments: A LOT of spin. Consistent.

Cleveland Golf is pretty much synonymous with wedges. Two things set this one apart from the crowd:

The first is internal construction. Instead of regular steel, the ZipCore is a low density material that lets Cleveland’s mad scientists shift the remaining weight around to produce an optimal center of gravity.

The second key feature of the RTX ZipCore is its UltiZip grooves. Cleveland claims that they are the deepest and sharpest they have produced. In addition, Cleveland has managed to squeeze two more grooves into the wedge face.

The result is a LOT of spin.
