GolfBlogger’s North Carolina Golf Trip: Day Three At Pinehurst

Compared to my two-and-a-half round golf marathon on Tuesday, Wednesday’s single round at Pinehurst No. 3 was a breezy walk in the park.

Three is the shortest course at Pinehurst, coming in at 5, 155 yards and a par 68. It would be a mistake to underestimate it, though. This Donald Ross masterpiece has bunkers and waste areas to trap the unwary and small, tricky greens to run up your score.

The character of Pinehurst No. 3 is very similar to PInehurst No. 4, which I played on Tuesday and I am told of No. 2, which I am scheduled to play Thursday.

Because we were under the looming threat of dangerous winds and thunderstorms, I took the rare step of riding a cart. Number 3 is routed in a loop, with the ninth and tenth holes furthest from the clubhouse. I didn’t want to get caught out in a thunderstorm

Fortunately, the storm held off until the final hole. The skies behind us blackened and the wind picked up. My group played the final hole in a mad rush and got to the green just as the heavens opened up.

Number 3 was a lot of fun, and I recommend that it be part of your rota when you make your Pinehurst trip.

I’ll have a full write up on Number 3, and all of the Pinehurst Courses shortly.
