GolfBlogger’s North Carolina Golf Trip: Tobacco Road

For the finale of my North Carolina Golf Trip, I played a round at Tobacco Road, just thirty minutes from Pinehurst.

Tobacco Road has gained a following among golf course design aficionados for its highly creative — and borderline insane — design. Seemingly endless blind shots, vast waste areas, towering dunes and craggy cliff faces create one of the most memorable rounds of golf I have ever played.

The course is the product of Mike Stranz, a legendary architect who produced just nine courses before dying far too young at age 50. Stranz’ Caledonia Golf and Fish Club is on my list of top ten courses I have played.

I don’t think Tobacco Road will make my top ten courses list, but it is absolutely a must-play for golf architecture fans. It is interesting to see the result of unbridled creativity.
