GolfBlogger’s New Year’s Predictions

I don’t care that the this year’s PGA Tour season officially began last year. As far as I’m concerned, the season begins with the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. That said, here are my golf predictions for the new year:

  • What passes for golf journalism hits rock bottom and then starts tunneling. This is not a prediction, exactly. It is a 100 percent certainty.

  • The Major Golf media will start 2015 hyperventilating over Tiger’s turnaround after he wins at Torrey Pines (again).

  • Golf manufacturers continue their release cycle unabated. This is not really a prediction, either. It’s a certainty because it is the only way to maintain the short term profit margins Wall Street demands. Of course, that sacrifices the future for the present.

  • UnderArmour buys a golf manufacturer to keep pace with Nike, Adidas (TaylorMade), Fila (Titleist), Puma (Cobra) and Perry Ellis (Hogan). How about Wilson?

  • In spite of a good early start, Tiger Woods will not win another Major. I’ve been right about this since 2009. It has nothing to do with the crash of his car and his marriage, however. Tiger lost his mojo when he was run down from behind by YE Yang in that year’s PGA Championship and has not been the same since.

  • Rory McIlroy will a major, but won’t complete the Career Slam which means he does not win the Masters.

  • Bubba Watson wins the Masters.

  • Jordan Speith wins the US Open.

  • Rick Fowler wins the Open Championship.

  • Rory McIlroy wins the PGA Championship.

  • Jason Day is my first alternate to any of these.

  • Lydia Ko becomes number one in the world.

  • Michele Wie wins two of the five LPGA Majors.

  • John Daly has another professional win. He won in 2014 at the Beko Classic in Turkey. That’s not even a third tier tournament, but it’s a start. The guy has so much talent, but just can’t keep it together.

  • Fred Couples will be named as the 2016 Ryder Cup Captain.

  • Still experiencing a hangover from the 2014 Ryder Cup meltdown, the US team will lose the President’s Cup in South Korea.

  • I break 80. Unlikely, but there’s a chance.

    1. I predict the first televised case of “golf rage” where a pro golfer uses his club on an opponent, or more likely an obnoxious fan.

    2. Phil wins a major… possibly the Masters to get us all Mickelhyped for him to take the US Open, but that major he won’t win.

Bubba won’t win a major this year.  Neither does Tiger.

      Rory and Rickie do.

      Dufner wins at least twice.

Tiger suffers another injury shortening his season.

Don’t think Daly will win this year (at least in America).  For the 2016 predictions though, he starts April 2016 on Champions tour and will win a couple times.
