Golfers Support Military Families Through Patriot Golf Day Events on Labor Day Weekend
TULSA, Okla., Aug. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/—Golfers have a great excuse to tee it up on Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31 – Sept. 3) as thousands of golf facilities will host Patriot Golf Day® events. They will collect donations for Folds of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization providing educational scholarships to families of service men and women disabled or killed in service to their country. Patriot Golf Day is supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
Since 2007, more than $12.8 million has been raised through Patriot Golf Day, allowing Folds of Honor to award more than 3,500 scholarships. President George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States of America, serves as the Honorary Chairman of Patriot Golf Day.
“Our military families make great sacrifices for our nation, and their children’s dreams of an education should not go unrealized,” said President Bush. “This Labor Day weekend, I ask you to join thousands of golfers across the country in supporting Patriot Golf Day.”
During the weekend, participating golf facilities host special tournaments or simply ask golfers to donate at least one additional dollar to their greens fee. Participating facilities can be found at PlayGolfAmerica.com. Non-golfers can participate by making a donation at FoldsofHonor.org.
“Freedom is not free and there are many families that have felt the impact of losing a loved one or having a spouse or parent seriously injured while protecting our way of life,” said Folds of Honor founder Major Dan Rooney, former F-16 pilot, PGA Professional and USGA Member. “Through Patriot Golf Day, we’ve giving golfers a way to show their support. We’ve made great strides but there is still a long way to go.”
There are more than one million dependents of fallen and wounded military service men and women from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts alone and 87 percent do not qualify for federal education assistance (as of Jan. 1, 2012). The Folds of Honor Foundation presents an ongoing tribute to brave service members by ensuring that their families have hope for the right educational start to life and best future possible.
Rooney launched Patriot Golf Day following his second of three tours of duty in Iraq. After returning from his tour, Rooney witnessed a profound display of a family’s grief as they welcomed home the remains of Corporal Brock Bucklin. Inspired by this tragic homecoming of a fallen American solider, Rooney started Folds of Honor to support military families.
