Great Lakes Golf Company Carry Bag Review

Great Lakes Golf Company Carry Bag
Grade: B+
Teacher’s Comments: A fine, lightweight bag

Company Website

Great Lakes Golf Company is a Frankenmuth, Michigan based company that sells a variety of branded products, including golf balls, towels, tees, headcovers and standbags.

The Great Lakes Lightweight Stand Bag is a good looking, well-designed bag that’s perfect for a quick nine.

At least, that’s what I’ve used it for. With just an hour or so of sunlight left, I can pop six clubs into the bag and head out to play, unencumbered by cart or expectations.

The Great Lakes bag clocks in at 4.8 pounds, which is a couple of pounds lighter than my push cart bag, but not as light as some ultralight bags on the market.

It does, however, strike me as somewhat sturdier than many of the ultralite bags I’ve seen in the pro shops.

One feature that makes it seem sturdier is that the “trigger” for the extension of the legs is part of the base, rather than a foot that protrudes from the bottom of the bag. In that sense, it’s a bit like the old Ping “Hoofer” bags.

The bag has six dividers, which is perfect for my “Sunday Bag” set of Driver, 3 hybrid, six iron, eight iron, pitching wedge and putter.

The bag also has:

  • a fleece lined valuables pocket
  • ball pocket
  • two large side pockets
  • a cooler pocket

There’s a useful handle built into the top of the bag.

The double carry strap works perfectly and adjusted perfectly to my dimensions. With six clubs, three balls, a bottle of water and an umbrella, I barely noticed it was there.

As an aside, I’ll note that the most fun I’ve had in a long time came on a recent rainy day at Washtenaw Golf Club. I had the Great Lakes bag on my back, an umbrella in my hand, and most of the course to myself. The bag held up well in the rain. I actually played pretty well on that round.

The one negative I have is that the legs don’t pop back as snugly as I’d like when I strap the bag on my back.

As for aesthetics, I like the black and white look. Golf bags should last for a number of years, and the “trendy” colorways offered each year by manufacturers will look dated a season or two out. Black and white never go out of style.

I’ll have more Great Lakes Golf Company product reviews in the coming weeks.
