BRIGHTON – Rick Hagenbach had some member knowledge of the greens, but he also had a hot putter.

The 68-year-old General Motors retiree and South Lyon resident shot a closing 72 for 142 and a five-shot win in the Third GAM Super Senior Championship presented by Sullivan Golf Travel at Oak Pointe Country Club’s Championship course August 1st.

“I was putting great and the ball was rolling for me,” Hagenbach said. “I know the greens, but the ball as also finding the hole.”

Ron Perrine of Holt finished second after shooting a final round 75 for 147.

Three golfers were next at 150 including Jim Russell of Stevensville, who shot 71, Anthony Snow of Royal Oak, who shot 73 and defending champion John French of Bloomfield Hills, who shot 77.

Joe Knight of Gaylord rounded out the top six with a 72 for 151.

Hagenbach won a GAM tournament for the first time, and put away the win with key made putts on No. 16 and 17. The putt at 17 was from 40 feet.

“The putter was the key,” he said. “I’m very happy with the win. For me winning a GAM championship was an accomplishment I really wanted.”

He said he appreciated the opportunity to play in a Super Senior championship.

“I really appreciate the GAM and the tournaments they run, and all the volunteers who come out to help,” he said.

Dick Bachtel of Linden won the Legends Division over age 70. He shot 72 for 145 and was three shots better than Fred Mann of Waterville, who shot 73 for 148.

Bob Grant of Ann Arbor was third in the division with a 74 for 150.

Claud Johnston of Canton shot 75 for 157 to be best among the golfers over age 75.

A field of 77 golfers played in the two-day championship.
