Hoag Classic Winners and History

The Hoag Classic is the successor to the long-running Toshiba Classic, which was founded in 1995 as the Toshiba Senior Classic. It holds the distinction of having the longest tenure at the same club – the Newport Beach Country Club — on the Champions Tour.

Prior to its identity as the Toshiba Classic, the Hoag was the “Crosby Southern Pro-Am.” serving as a local satellite event for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The intent was to find a place for pros who missed the cut at the Pebble Beach to play.

The Crosby Southern Pro Am was renamed the Newport Classic Pro-Am in 1987. Taco Bell became the name sponsor from 1993 – 1995.

In 1995, Cathy Mockett of Newport Beach became the first woman professional to play in the event. She shot 80-79.

The tournament became part of the PGA TOUR Champions in 1997.

The title sponsor, Hoag, is a hospital in Newport Beach.

The longest playoff in the history of the Champions Tour occurred at the 1997 Toshiba Senior Classic when Bob Murphy defeated Jay Sigel on the ninth hole. The record was broken the following year at the Royal Caribbean Classic. There have been four playoffs in the 19-year history of the event, and all of them have gone at least five extra holes.
