Homeless Caddies Sleep In Washtenaw Country Club Awnings (1927)
While researching early golf tournaments in Michigan, I ran across this hilarious note from the 1927 Michigan Amateur, which was held at the Washtenaw Country Club (Now the Washtenaw Golf Club).
Homeless caddies abounded around the Washtenaw Country Club yesterday. According to club officials, the visiting caddies found the new awnings errected (sic) around the course excellend bets. One would climb upon each side, roll over the piping support and have an excellent hammock.

It seems caddies had neither money, nor status in 1927. The image of a swarm of caddies rolling themselves up in awnings is something right out of a Buster Keaton movie.
The 1927 Michigan Amateur was won by Johnny Malloy of Grand Rapids, over Bud Hewitt of Kalamazoo. Malloy took the match 3-2.
