Honeycrisp Apples From Dexter Cider Mill

Autumn in Michigan signals the arrival of a new apple crop, along with the state’s favorite combination: cider and donuts. Cold pressed cider and fresh fried donuts in an oil-stained paper bag may as well be the official state dish. You can’t drive very far this time of year without seeing a farm stand or mill selling them.

Michigan produces more than 24 million bushels, or around 900 million pounds of apples each year. These beauties are the Honey Crisp variety from the Dexter Cider Mill.

Dexter is a small city located about ten miles west, and slightly north of Ann Arbor. In addition to the regionally famous Dexter Cider Mill, Dexter is home to the Clinton-Huron Metropark system’s Hudson Mills Golf Course.  I have mixed feelings about Hudson Mills. It is on the boring side, but is very walkable, reasonably inexpensive and nearly always has tee times available.

It also has a bear. Or at least rumors of a bear, which apparently lives in the adjacent Hudson Mills Metropark along the Huron River.
