With the death of Fidel Castro, and the move toward normalization of relations with Cuba, I found myself wondering about the state of golf in Cuba.
As far as I can tell, there are two courses, El Varadero and the Havana Golf Club. Varadero dates to the 1930s, and is the only 18 hole club in Cuba. Havana Golf Club is a nine hole course.
El Varadero is the site of an annual charity Pro-Am called the Montecristo Cup.
Now THERE’S an event I’d like to play. I enjoy Cuban food (there have been some nice Cuban restaurants in Cuba), and what is not to like about Cuban Rum and Cigars?
It strikes me that as Cuba is opening to US Tourism, a real opportunity exists for building a couple of golf course and hotel complexes. Cuba seems like it would be a great getaway during the winter months.
