Lewis and Lane Win 2020 GAM Senior Four-Ball Championship

Meadowbrook’s Jim Lewis and Jeff Lane Win 2020 GAM Senior Four-Ball Championship

  SHELBY TOWNSHIP – Jim Lewis and Jeff Lane, a pair of Meadowbrook Country Club members, teamed up to win the 13th GAM Senior Four-Ball Championship Wednesday at Cherry Creek Golf Club.

  A final-round 7-under 65 for an 11-under 133 total had Lewis, the GAM Senior Champion in 2018, feeling especially good for his partner.

  “I’m thrilled to death for him, and to be able to be part of his first win is extremely rewarding,” Lewis said. “I’m excited for him, more than anything in the world, because I know how long and how hard you work to get a GAM title, and what that means to every player. So, to be with a guy who gets his very first one, it gives me goosebumps.”

  The closing 65 earned them the win by one shot over two teams.

  Mike Eriksen of Clarkston and Ken Hudson of Bloomfield Hills shot a second consecutive 67 for 134, and Bob Carson of Auburn Hills and Jerry Dagenais of Troy teamed up for a 66 for 134.

  Defending champions Leo Daigle of Wixom and Kevin Klemet of White Lake shot a closing 66 for 135 and fourth place.

   Champions were also determined in the Super Senior Division for golfers over age 65.

   The Jackson duo of Mike Raymond and Pete Walz fired a final 69 for 8-under 136. It was one better than Scott Bitters of Dexter and his partner George Washburn of Frederick who combined for a 69 and 137. Rick Herpich of Orchard Lake and Tom Rex of Charlevoix finished third with a 70 for 139.

  Lane said it was great to get invited by Lewis to play in the championship. Both are past senior club champions at the club.

  “I’m pumped,” Lane said. “I’ve never really been invited to be a partner at one of these events. Jim called me and it was great to compete.”

   The duo made just two bogeys in 36 holes.

  “On any golf course anywhere I think that keeping away from bogeys or worse I the key to any good score,” Lewis said. “We both played very well. Our individual scores would have reflected that as well. I think we were both under our (handicap) indexes, and to do that in GAM tournament is a thrill. Any time you can put a GAM trophy in your house, that’s the one that you’re most proud of. You can do things at your own course or club, but to do something in your state’s golf association where guys come from all over the state is just extremely rewarding.”

  Lewis said it was also a joy to play Cherry Creek, which was hosting its first GAM tournament.

  “Both of us are faders and it set up perfectly for us,” he said. “The conditions were fantastic and the hospitality was exceptional.”

  A field of 46 two-golfer teams played 36-holes of four-ball over the two days, and Lewis and Lane will have their names inscribed on the Gus Cosmos Trophy.
