Linden’s Donna Benford Wins Another Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship
BAD AXE – In a battle of past champions Donna Benford of Linden turned back Sue Campbell of Kalamazoo 1-up in the title match to win the 16th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship presented by Sullivan Golf Travel at Verona Hills Golf Club Tuesday.
It was the second title for Benford, who also claimed the championship in 2015. Campbell was seeking a third title in the championship, and was runner-up for the second consecutive year.
Benford reached the final with a 4 and 2 semifinal win over Joanne Adams of Detroit, and Campbell reached the final by topping Joan Garety of Grand Rapids, another two-time former champion, in 19 holes.
Champions were also crowned in two other flights. Karen Flood of Mt. Clemens beat Kimberly Mettinen of Hazel Park 3 and 2 to win the Jean Murray Flight, and Sue Vandevusse of Bad Axe topped Sue Geyer of Alpena in 19 holes to win the Sara Wold Flight.
The state’s top senior women golfers played one round of bracket qualifying stroke play and then three rounds of matches to determine the champions.
Two-time defending champion Julie Massa of Holt had car trouble on her way to the tournament and had to withdraw.
