A look to the U.S. open, who is the favourite already?

The U.S. open this year was an exciting one, and we’re already looking forward to next year and having a look at the top golfer’s chances. The U.S. Open is one of the biggest golfing events of the year, and although the leaderboard and players list was unsurprisingly dominated by the Americans this year with Dustin Johnson coming out on top, many of the world’s best golfers look to make this the event that they win. It’s a tough competition throughout, but it is one where many golfers look to prove themselves. Ticket sales are now open and many will be keeping an eye on some of the world’s best golfers at the last few events of the year such as the Australian Open, TOUR Championship and 2017’s Masters to help weigh up their odds for the U.S. Open’s champion.

Rory McIlroy

Rory has had a tough golfing season and although he has proved before that he has had what it takes to win, he hasn’t quite made the cut this year. The Irishman has a lot to prove and as he was tipped to take the crown for this year’s tournament, he is likely to come back with a bang. American courses can prove difficult and unfamiliar for non-American players, but having previously won the 2011 U.S. open, 2012 PGA tournament, 2014 Open Championship and 2014 PGA Championship, and breaking many records along the way, he is highly likely to be one of the biggest favourites for next year.

Jason Day

Jason Day is currently world number 1 and is in the form of his life. Day is looking set to win the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne with his partner Adam Scott, with 888sport tipping the pair at 7/4, but only won his first major tournament in 2015 at the PGA Championship, which means he is almost certain to have plenty of power left in him to keep on his winning streak. Everyone’s eyes will be on Day for the U.S. Open in 2017, and it’ll be interesting to see if he gets thrown off of his fantastic run, or be crowned the champion.

Jordan Speith

Speith is almost always a strong favourite, no matter what tournament he enters, and although he isn’t necessarily always the first choice for many, he is always up there in the top 10. The U.S. open could look to be Speith’s tournament, and he is also relatively new to winning major tournaments with his first big win being at the 2015 Masters Tournament. 2015 was most definitely Speith’s year with the win at the Masters being followed by a win at the 2015 U.S. Open, and a win at the 2015 Tour Championship, which clinched the 2015 FedEx Cup. The 2016 Masters Tournament however led to a big collapse after he was leading, so he’ll be looking to start over again in 2017 with a big win at the U.S. Open. Because of his poor form this season when compared to 2015, many eyes will be looking at him as almost an underdog in the competition, against the likes of Day and McIlroy, but he is certainly accustomed to being a winner.
