The inaugural LPGA Volvik Championship Pro-Am will kick off its pairings party on Tuesday, May 24 at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. Participants also will be able to compete in “The Big Break At The Big House,” a fun golf competition on the field of the University of Michigan Stadium.
The Pro Am is presetned by A123 Systems, a local manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries.
“We will be enjoying the camaraderie of all the golfers on the basketball court where the University of Michigan competes,” said Tournament Director Keith Karbo. “Then we are also going to create some “Big Break” type of activities on the football field including a “Flop Shot Contest” and the “Distance Control Challenge. We will be asking LPGA players to assist with the on-field activities.”
A pairings party allows pro-am participants to meet each other, and (usually) to select the players they will play with the next day. The amateur and professional pairings are often done in a draft style format.
The Pro-Am tournament takes place the following day. Playing in a scramble format, each amateur foursome will be paired with an LPGA player on the front nine and then with a second LPGA player on the back nine.
“It doesn’t matter if you are a scratch player or a 30 handicap, the Pro-Am experience is for those who love the game of golf,” said Karbo. “The thing to remember is that your pro only requires you to enjoy your time on the course.”
A Pro-Am is a unique event. In no other major sport can an amateur compete in the same sport as that professional athlete.
“In our Pro-Am you will play the same championship course at Travis Pointe Country Club with the same pros competing for the LPGA Volvik Championship,” said Karbo. “And you will compete in ‘The Big Break at the Big House’ on the same field where the Michigan Wolverines play football.
“These two days and these two venues will provide a one of a kind, unforgettable experience.”
