Marshall Country Club Hosting 30th Women’s Atlas Trophy Matches, Celebrating 100 Years

MARSHALL – Historic Marshall Country Club, celebrating 100 years in 2022, is hosting the 30th Women’s Atlas Trophy Matches Saturday and Sunday.

The top women golfers in the state representing private golf clubs and public venues will make up the two teams and play a Ryder Cup-style competition.

Marshall CC is celebrating part of its heritage each month this year and hosting the Women’s Atlas Trophy Matches is part of this month’s celebration of women playing golf at the club for 100 years. A Centennial Outing for the club is also being planned for August.

The course, originally designed by the legendary Tom Bendelow and later renovated and redesigned by Michigan architect Bill Newcomb, is a private golf cub that welcomes public play on designated days.

It measures just over 6,500 yards from the championship tees with multiple tee options to fit all skill levels. Views of Lyon Lake and Fish Lake add to the experience of tree-lined fairways and small greens typical of the 1920s golf designs.

Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member John Morse, a former PGA Tour player, University of Michigan standout golfer and winner of the 1995 Hawaiian Open, is also a former PGA professional at Marshall CC. His pro tips for playing the course remain featured on the club’s website; marshallcountryclub.com.

The club also features the Lyon Lake Grill and Event Center, which is open to the public.

Jacob Martinson is the PGA professional and Josh Coles is the superintendent.

The Women’s Atlas Trophy matches, named for the late Edward Atlas, a noted golf leader in Michigan, were first played in 1989 and have become a competition between women GAM members who are members of a private club, and GAM members who do not belong to a private club. The matches are unique in that teams are made up of golfers of all ages, including seniors and juniors.

Foursomes matches will be played Saturday morning with four-ball matches to follow in the afternoon. Individual matches are played on Sunday. One point is awarded per match with ½ point being given to each team for a halved match. If tied at the end of the competition, the team currently holding the trophy retains it.

The captains of both the “Public” and “Private” teams are selected by the GAM. The captains select 12 team members each, using GAM Honor Roll points and other criteria.

The Private team leads the series 15-11 with three ties after a 15-9 win a year ago at Tecumseh Golf Club.

Representing the Public Team captained by Cynthia Pinkard are sisters Bridget and Grace Boczar of Canton, Anci Dy of Traverse City, Elizabeth Harding of South Lyon, Abby Livingston of Novi, Adie Maki of Canton, Kendall Payne of Livonia, Katherine Potter of South Lyon, Rachel Sampson of East Lansing, Lori Schlicher of Lewiston, Lauren Timpf of Macomb and Shelly Weiss of Southfield.

Representing the Private Team captained by Jean Murray are Audrey Becker of Grosse Pointe Farms, Kimberly Dinh of Midland, Elise Fennell of Kentwood, Alexa Hatz of Novi, Shannon Kennedy of Beverly Hills, Mia Melendez of Ann Arbor, Cathy Netter of Monroe, Natalie Samdal of Caledonia, Sophie Stevens of Highland, Darci Stocker of Flint, Olivia Stoll of Haslett and Cindy Troyanovich of Grosse Pointe Shores.
