The PGA Tour has decided that the WGC-Match Play Championship will be decided in an 18-hole event, rather than the previous 36. Apparently, they think it will make for better television. The Tour might be right. There have been only two occasions over the last 12 years when the 18-hole leader lost in the end: Davis Love vs Tiger Woods in 2004 and Andrew Magee vs Jeff Maggert in 1999. The trend has been that the second eighteen are superfluous.
Eighteen hole semifinal matches would be held Sunday morning.
I understand the change, but they now run the risk of having the entire event end after just a dozen holes. Not likely, but possible.
